A good time before the movies?

Written on September 22, 2010 – 3:29 pm | by monda

Want to have a fun time picking out your next movie to see in theaters? Richard Roeper & The Movies report is not the basic review with some support from lines in the movie, instead it is an interactive experience for the viewer. Roeper does an excellent job in adding visual and audio support to his review of films.  Roeper’s reviews have a very interesting tone because the movie’s music is added in support throughout his review. The audio and visual elements make the reviews into a mix of a movie trailer and well constructed critique.  The quick two to three minute reports give the viewer a complete feel of what the film will entail. An example of his style is from the review of “Eat Pray Love” where Roeper says, “As when she is in India and she strikes up a friendship with a man from Texas,” and then is transitioned into an important scene with audio and visual support to shows the relationship among the characters. The overall review of the filming, writing, directing and the performing by the actors gives a clear and concise review of what the viewer can expect. The letter grades Roeper uses help to narrow the search knowing that the review comes from an experienced movie critic.

Goodman to Play Bad Guy

Popular horror movie fan-site Dread Central reports that Clerks/Jersey Girl writer/director Kevin Smith dropped the news that John Goodman is going to be playing a Paster Fred Phelps type villian in Smith’s upcoming religous horror film “Red State.”

I for one am excited. Smith and Goodman are a natural pairing. They are both fat, white and can grow super-sweet beards. Plus, after “Cop Out” I’m pretty sure that Kevin Smith owes me about $12.

Booze Ads Finally Allowed in Virginia Colleges?

Written on September 22, 2010 – 12:47 am | by capriciaalston

Heineken_GameDayYesterday, advertisers called on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the state of Virginia’s ban on most alcohol advertising in college newspapers. They argued that the law restricts the 1st Amendment of free speech. Advertisers also argued that majority of students in college are of drinking age, so essentially, advertisers are losing money caused by the lack of advertising. University of Virginia and Virginia Tech newspapers are both blaming the law for 30 thousand dollars in lost advertising revenue annually. Who knows, maybe Virginia’s not so dry after all!

Perez Hilton…The Ultimate Critic

Written on September 21, 2010 – 11:46 pm | by arose5

The biggest critics of teen stars seem to be the parents of teenagers who think that teen celebs are horrible role models for their children. Other than the parents, Perez Hilton has become known as one of the most influential and notorious pop culture critics out there…and he doesn’t dismiss the little teen celebs either!

Not only does he have an active blog but he’s very popular on Twitter with over 2 million friends. He has his own YouTube channel and a fashion blog (where he talks about teen celebs fashion too).

Example of how he is a critic to the tween/teen world is shown throughout his entire website. He recently wrote a story about Miley Cyrus living with her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. Instead of taking her side, he totally disses her and her father…and you can clearly see where he calls her skanky and trashy. (He tends to do this a lot with his Miley posts.)

Some take his words as rude and insincere but his blogging is unique because he says pretty much what’s on everyone else’s mind…and he does it with no shame at all.

He was one of the first people to do so. Not everything he has to say about teen celebs is negative; he seems to love Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

Would he be the best critic for actual teens to read? Probably not. He has a tendency to use raunchy language and provocative drawings on pictures, but he does critique the teen celebs pretty well.

Many think that he shouldn’t target the younger celebs because of their age, but why not? They put themselves out there, try to act like adults, and secretly probably like the publicity anyway.

Do you think he should exclude teen celebs from his blog? What are your thoughts on his critiques?

Pop Punk Critic Review

Written on September 21, 2010 – 8:37 pm | by katierobertson

JM1-1024x682When you think of Mark Hoppus, I’m not sure “serious critic” would be the first thing that comes to mind.  But over the past five years, since Blink-182 went on an “indefinite hiatus” (now over), Hoppus has proven to pop punk fans that he can be taken seriously as a critic.

I’m not sure that his intention was ever to become a serious critic, but between his blog, twitter account and brand new television talk show, Hoppus has several outlets through which he can share his every opinion about what’s going on in the pop punk scene.  And he does just that.

The first thing to check out is his personal blog, HiMyNameisMark.  His posts here are generally about new artists in the genre, his personal projects and links to videos he thinks his pop punk audience will appreciate.  The focus though is on genuine criticism of what’s good and what’s bad in pop punk right now.

Hoppus also wrote a series of articles for SPIN.com, called “Hopp on Pop”.  These weekly articles profiled new artists, and ran for about four months.  A great article about the “Hopp on Pop” series can be found here.

For almost 20 years Hoppus has remained very active and immersed in the pop punk community, and has played many roles- musician, producer, talk show host and critic. His insider knowledge and personal experience give him a unique position within the community, and when he talks, people listen. I think the general pop punk audience appreciates hearing his opinions and takes him seriously as a powerful critic.

Dancing with the WANNA BE stars?

Written on September 21, 2010 – 3:48 pm | by storres7

The first episode of  “Dancing with the stars” 2010 kicked off last night on prime time ABC. As usual, they have the regular group of dancers who teach these “celebrities” how to dance and compete for absolutely nothing but publicity. This year however, it seems like ABC is running out of a budget! Instead of hiring actual talented stars they are hiring low budget “wanna be” reality T.V stars like Audrina from “The Hills”, the one and only “Situation” and of course Sarah Pailn’s daughter and biggest “star” they’ve ever had, Bristol.

“Eat Pray Love” and eat some more!

Written on September 20, 2010 – 8:11 pm | by monda

“Eat Pray Love” makes the audiences want to eat, pray, love and eat a little more. The movie inspired by the book “Eat Pray Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, has been transformed by director Ryan Murphy. The movie starring Julia Roberts, as a relationship challenged Liz Gilbert, is in desperate need of a change in her life. After Liz’s failed marriage and failed long term relationship leaves her depressed she is in desperate need of a change.  Liz Gilbert decides to go on an adventure to find what she wants in life by traveling to Italy, India and eventually in full circle to Bali where the movie began. This inspiring movie of self discovery is uplifting to women of all generations. The overall goal is to show the need for women to remove the masks they wear in their day to day life.  “Eat Pray Love” is successful in inspiring women to find their own path by showing the many challenges and at time failures it takes to become truly happy. This movie is also important for women who are struggling to find their path in life no matter their age. The importance of exploring new cultures is emphasized in the theme of the film. A movie that shows women in a positive light is refreshing after all the negative images of women in reality shows. “Eat Pray Love” fits in the self help section of romantic comedies and will influence the viewer at the bare minimum to eat.

DC’s Own Comic Critic

Written on September 19, 2010 – 10:54 am | by gpelkofski

Yes, the Washington Post has it’s own comic book reporter. Michael Cavna writes the “Comic Riffs” blog for the Washington Post‘s website. Michael Cavna

It’s not just comic books and cartoons that Cavna writes about. He covers a wide variety of topics from politics to TV and movies, and usually finds a way to tie those into comics.

In fact, I wouldn’t describe Cavna as a critic or reviewer. Rarely, if ever, does he write a single review of a comic book or cartoon. According to the description of his blog, Cavna “celebrate[s],contemplate[s], eviscerate[s], and pontificate[s] on cartoons.”

One of the prime examples of Cavna’s topicality is when he wrote several blog entries defending Comedy Central’s show “South Park” after they were censored for attempting to show the Muslim prophet Muhammed last April.

Cavna’s comic book blog represents the growing trend of geeky things (like comics) going mainstream. Many of his posts revolves around comic book’s moving from the printed page to the big screen. Just after this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Cavna reported that Marvel had already released a teaser trailer for their upcoming Avengers movie in 2012.

His style of writing about comic books for the general audience is one that I try to emulate anytime I write for this blog or for student publications like Broadside and connect2mason.com. It is the way that comic book reporting should be, and hopefully will further influence people into reading and appreciating comic books as much as Cavna and I do.
