Booze Ads Finally Allowed in Virginia Colleges?

Heineken_GameDayYesterday, advertisers called on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the state of Virginia’s ban on most alcohol advertising in college newspapers. They argued that the law restricts the 1st Amendment of free speech. Advertisers also argued that majority of students in college are of drinking age, so essentially, advertisers are losing money caused by the lack of advertising. University of Virginia and Virginia Tech newspapers are both blaming the law for 30 thousand dollars in lost advertising revenue annually. Who knows, maybe Virginia’s not so dry after all!

    I didn’t even realize that there was a ban on alcohol advertising on campuses. But, yeah if Broadside was able to get revenue from alcohol advertisers, then maybe they wouldn’t have had to cut down on the amount of paper they use.

    Either way this is still ridiculous ban. College students are gonna drink whether they see ads for beer or not.

    Though I do disagree with their argument that most college students are of drinking age. I’d like to see the numbers on that one. I figure most college students are 18, 19, or 20. I thought most college 21 and over are seniors or grad students and I doubt they outnumber freshmen, sophomores, and juniors combined.

    As immoral as it may sound, that’s their target market. There’s no need to beat around the bush. Let them get money so the world can keep turning.

    I agree with schrist8 and with what you said. The majority of college students are of age to drink and if not they do it anyway. If they’re losing that much money, why not have the ads? College students can just turn on the TV and see them on there anyway, what’s the difference?
