90’s music critic profile

Written on September 12, 2010 – 5:14 pm | by Alex Howard

Lately I have been interested in the blogging of this critic named Scott Tomford.  I usually check his blogs to get updates on what certain 90s bands of today are doing now and if they are playing any concerts soon.  For example, I first heard of the Alice In Chains and Deftones tour, also known as the Black Diamond Skye tour, from him late last year.

He also talks all about how the 90s are a unique decade with so many different forms of music and how it was a huge culture shock.  This guy does it all.  Also listed are popular forms of music of that decade including grunge/alternative rock, contemporary r&b, teen pop, hip-hop, southern rap, swing revival, nu-metal, grunge, and plenty of others.  A few of these I didn’t even realize were a genre.

The article I came to that I found most interesting was an introduction to the 90s.  Instead of going through the decade by going through the most common information, he goes through the cultural side and talks about the Lilith Fair movement by singer Sarah McLachlan and the mainstreaming of hip-hop and rap.  Overall, this discusses the radical changes of music throughout this decade compared to the 80s as a decade of glam metal and new wave music.

This is a great source for 90s music.  Check out some music videos of the bands on his page!

Had some spicy, hot salsa last night

I attended the Marc Anthony concert last night as a reviewer for Broadside and I can say one word: Phenomenal.

Knowing absolutely none of his songs besides the famous “I Need to Know,” there was not a moment I wasn’t enjoying myself.

The crowd was wild, the music was deafening and Anthony was brilliant.

Here are some pictures from the event:

Humor Critic Profile

Written on September 8, 2010 – 7:08 pm | by Rob Bock

One internet critic whose works I enjoy reading is Seanbaby. I first started reading his reviews of terrible video games in old editions of Electronic Gaming Monthly, when I was a kid and the magazine was still in business. I was delighted to see that in recent years, he has begun working with internet humor site Cracked.com as a featured columnist. Though his recent articles deal with a menagerie of subjects too broad to list, my favorite works of his are video game articles.
My number one favorite would have to be his ranking of the top 20 worst video games of all time. The fact that it was published over eight years ago means the article probably could use some updating, but I still enjoy it nonetheless. Containing video game bombs like Extreme Sports with the Berenstein Bears, Bible Adventures, and the infamous Custer’s Revenge, the list is a riot and definitely worth reading if you’ve ever played a video game.

Another article worth reading is sadly unfinished. Seanbaby and several other humor writers attempted, several years ago, to review every movie on the AFI’s list of 100 funniest movies. Filled mostly with sarcastic quips about the movies, the list stops at #43, but it thankfully contains the writers’ list of what THEY think are the top movies of all time, which seems to be a much more accurate list.

Founding Member of Electric Light Orchestra Killed in Freak Accident

Written on September 8, 2010 – 5:59 pm | by emilysharrer

Electric Light Orchestra founding member and cellist Michael Edwards died in a freak accident on Friday when a giant hay bale fell on top of the van he was driving. The saddest part? Edwards had reportedly beaten cancer and was only 62. What a tragic way to go.

Can’t remember any of ELO’s hits?

Check out some of their classic songs:

Livin’ Thing
Do Ya
Evil Woman
Strange Magic
Mr. Blue Sky

Ad Critic

Written on September 8, 2010 – 5:18 pm | by capriciaalston

It was difficult for me to find a prominent critic in advertising, especially without choosing a specific category of advertising. There are several types of critics, and my search was too broad so I took a little different of an approach.

I searched for a site instead that informed as well as critiqued advertising as well as television and music videos. The 2 sites I found are http://creativity-online.com/, and https://advertisingcritic.wordpress.com/.

Creativity-online.com/ is extremely informative as well as up-to-date. It actually had the Cee-lo music video on there which happens to be banned or at least requiring a password on several other sites. It also provides a lot of sarcasm which I enjoy because many of the ads presented are ridiculous.

Advertisingcritic.wordpress.com/ is actually a specific person, asanchez39, who I believe has great insight on a lot of ads. This is still just a site and not only just a specific author but he/she critiques on commercials, articles, you name it. I love reading the honest truth about ads though whether sarcastic or just purely harsh, and this is exactly what asanchez39 provides.

Daryl Surat, Anime Critic

Written on September 8, 2010 – 5:16 pm | by ohstalon06

What is always interesting about Anime critics, is because of the launch of all sorts of different medias, critic Daryl Surat hasn’t made his bones through the tradition means. Daryl is one of three hosts that make up the Anime World Order podcast, which is one of if not the most popular Anime Podcast available on the internet.

In addition to that, Surat is also a contributing writer to Otaku USA Magazine a bi-monthly magazine that goes over much of the shows that are either being released now, or are getting a rerelease from different companies.

One particular recent feature he has written, has been of the classic animated series Urusei Yatsura A show that premiered in 1981. His review style of pretty much anything he reviews, whether it be for the magazine or his podcast, is that he doesn’t hold back and is very upfront and honest about what he thinks of any show that he sets his sites on. This review of the classic show is no different, granted some people can find his style grating at times, its very good to see that reviewers put as much love into what they love to watch as they do in their reviews or features.

Ann Powers: Pop Music Critic

Written on September 8, 2010 – 12:46 am | by cclancy

As a pop music critic, it only seems right that Ann Powers reside in Los Angeles, surrounded by tween pop sensations.  Since 2006, Powers has held the title of chief pop music critic for the Los Angeles Times.  Before landing this gig, wrote for papers such as The Rocket, New York Times, and Village Voice.

On a regular basis, Powers blogs for L.A. Times’ music blog, Pop & Hiss.  From Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus to Zach de la Rocha and M.I.A., Powers covers all things music.  Not only does she review newly released pop albums, but she also blogs funny or news worthy stories surrounding pop music.

In a recent post, Powers blogged a music review for Katy Perry’s new album, “Teenage Dream.”  The review was a little strange, though, as Powers spent almost as much time commenting on Katy’s love life and physical appearance as she did on the actual album.  In a system she uses to grade all of her album reviews, Powers rated Perry’s album with three out of four stars; Not bad!

Overall, I enjoyed reading Powers’ work, especially on Pop & Hiss.  I like the way makes her stories more interesting and unique by adding a lot of her personality and humor into each post.
