Website response: Rizzo Music

Written on October 11, 2010 – 6:20 pm | by Alex Howard

For those who are addicted to the ’90s music beat, Rizzomusic.com is one of the best websites around for that category.  This website is dedicated to covering everything there is to ’90s music, including the top songs and artists, song and album reviews, news articles, the background behind ’90s genres, music videos, playlists and much more.

It was started in 2006 by “one college student’s dream to revive the best music of the decade.”  This college student  goes by the name of “Rizzo.”  This site is very fan-oriented, which attracted me to this right away.

An article that attracted me was entitled, “The Beats That Live On and On and On.” This article gives an in-depth look of the impact ’90s rap had on the rap of today, and how many of the influences are not appreciated today.  This article is basically like a history lesson and is by far my favorite article on the site.  The next article is called, “90s Grunge Hits,” and gives an inside look on the flannel shirt and why it was such an important part of grunge music.  A playlist is added to the end of the article.  The last column is a “Song of the Week” segment in which he chooses a song to talk about and gives the band’s intake on it.

Even though Rizzo Music is one of the few ’90s music sites and is quite informative and entertaining, it still has its weaknesses.  A lot of the articles are outdated, and some of them do not give enough information on the impact of ’90s music as a whole instead of individual bands.

There are several ideas of articles I came up with to make this site even better.  One is to talk about if there is any hope left in the future of music.  Decades such as the ’90s had so many different genres emerge out of nowhere, but everything today seems to be the same.  Another one I could write about is a summary/review of ’90s cover bands, just to add something different to the mix.  Do any of these cover bands remind me of the originals?  The other idea is to revisit past concerts/festivals of the ’90s, and what it meant for those bands who performed on the big stage to get their big break.

Would you want Danza as your teacher?

Actor and Boxer Tony Danza teaching 10th grade English?

Teach: Tony Danza is the new A&E series that premiered this month that depicts Danza teaching a high-school classroom in Pennsylvania.  Whether or not you  would want your kids being taught by Danza, this series is definitely getting a thumbs-up from the critics and worth checking out!

Anime News Network

Written on October 6, 2010 – 7:22 pm | by ohstalon06

Anime News Network is an online web service which aggregates all of the anime news that breaks in the world. Whether the news be made in Japan via announcing of new shows or continuations of said shows. Or in America, via the licensing of potentially popular material in the United States.

The site has many different facets of the anime fandom represented in the site. Reviews of DVD series, reports from various anime conventions, a weekly webcomic series, streaming video, polls and a very active fan forum site helps keep the community alive and active on a daily basis.

The one problem that I have with the site is that there seems to be few editorial or opinion people on the site, while there is their weekly podcast the “ANNCast” there is not much aside from a weekly piece called “Hey, Answerman!” in the way of opinions and other things on the site. Other than that, I enjoy the site quite a bit and hope that it continues to live on day after day.

Phil Collins Writing a Book on Alamo Artifacts

Written on October 6, 2010 – 7:02 pm | by emilysharrer

After his release of “Going Back,” an album of R&B cover songs, we should have assumed anything was possible for Genesis front-man and solo artist Phil Collins. But really, who saw this coming?

Billboard.com reports that Collins is currently working on a new project: a book about his “extensive collection” of Alamo and Texas Revolution artifacts. Not sure how the book’s going to be, or who’s going to buy it, but Collins sure is a Renaissance man.

Check out the best thing Phil Collins has ever been a part of here.

Website Response: Splitsider

Written on October 6, 2010 – 6:02 pm | by Rob Bock

Splitsider is one of the best, and only, websites devoted to covering the humor beat. It started last September as an addition to The Awl Network and is run by New York-based blogger/comedian Adam Frucci. Updates come throughout the day from Monday through Friday, and usually are short links to online videos, news about the world of comedy, or the occasional column article.

One such column is “The Finally Screenings”, in which comedian Alden Ford watches classic comedy movies and reviews them to see whether or not they stand the test of time. A different column appearing weekly is British Comedy, by another comedian named Curtis Gwinn, which takes an in-depth look at the world of British comedy and some interesting shows and movies within that world.
The last and most recent, column is Sketch Artists, in which Colin Perkins, also a comedian, profiles sketch comedy groups which produce online videos. This is my favorite column, because it reads like a traditional feature column and includes quotes from the groups and, of course, hilarious videos.

Though Splitsider is already informative and interesting, I came up with several ideas for articles that might suit the website. One could be summaries/reviews of recent stand-up comedy CDs or television specials. Another article might profile someone in the comedy business and give a biography, so to speak, of their career and what they’ve done, why they’re famous, and what material of theirs is best. I think that a weekly article previewing or rating of all the week’s big comedy TV shows might be fun to read, as well.

‘The Middle’ Brings Audiences Back to Simpler Times

Written on October 6, 2010 – 5:54 pm | by msathmar

Happy Days, The Brady Bunch and The Wonder Years are all classic sitcoms that epitomize family togetherness – or at least more so than in modern times. The Middle, however, is a revamped version of these old-time favorites, and draws on traditional family values to draw in audiences. That being said, my mom loves the show – I think she relates to the harried housewife main character. For a list of other reason why the show is so likeable, click here.

Brandy’s Bringing It Back – Or Trying To…

Written on October 6, 2010 – 5:40 pm | by msathmar

C-List celebrity “Brandy” has been out of the spotlight for about a decade or so, thus, it’s about time she joined DWTS to try to revive her career (as many on-their-way-out celebs do). In order to supplement this and I’m assuming to help increase her fan base, she has started a weekly DTWS blog – check it out here.

Website Response-Ontopinternetmarketing.com

Written on October 6, 2010 – 5:28 pm | by capriciaalston

On Top Internet Marketing Services is a website dedicated to small business owners to develop an Internet presence to generate more leads and sales. It focuses on ways for smaller business owners(especially “mom and pop” restaurants) to get the word out about their business without wasting a lot of money on business cards and yellow pages, which they have mentioned have become nothing more than door stops in this electronically driven society.

The company was founded in early 2010 by a married couple, Monique and Derek Alvarez, after both becoming fed up with, and quitting their corporate jobs/firms. After learning about Direct Sales principles and Internet Marketing, the couple managed to only offer their products and services to people who are already interested in buying what they have. Monique is now a Social Media Extraordinaire, and Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube are just a few ways she offers advice on getting information out to the public. Derek figured out how to get websites ranked at the top of Google, as well as get heaps of leads and sales through Google and Facebook Pay-per-click advertising, so this couple is far from lost in the Internet market.

Most importantly this corporation/website focuses on marketing your site, converting your visitors to loyal customers, and following-up with them through such avenues as Facebook Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Paid Ads, Email Marketing and Text Message Marketing.

The biggest weakness I see is just how the site is organized and displayed. The site provides quality information and I do believe the couple has credibility because they do identify their clients(and many are very recognizable), but the site could be more presentable, especially when marketing and advertising is their strength. When giving out such important information, you would think they would take their own advice. Their biggest strength is that they give a lot of do’s and dont’s, and although some of the advice may be common sense to some, it is extremely helpful and emphasizes the basics of advertising and marketing.

Three Articles to Check Out:
The Times Square Guide to Email Marketing: This article informs public about proper ways to set up email/Internet Advertisements. They make sure to emphasize to avoid busyness because too many choices sometimes turns consumers away.

Facebook Fan Pages and Advertising: They have found that “Facebook Advertising to send users to your Page can give a business “instant gratification” aka “instant results” because it’s like direct marketing, only with a better response, not to mention it’s easier to track.” This article also provides a video.

When Marketing Your Business…Don’t Whiz on the Electric Fence!: This article reminds business owners that with all of the ways that consumers block out commercials and other ads, you must be savvy in how you decide to promote your business.

Three Pitches:
1) With Apples new iAd, I would emphasize the merging of this company and at least one ad since they have finally gotten the idea of marketing to only the people interested in their product. This is what iAd specialized in and the converging of the two would make the company even more successful.
2) Being younger, and in a society where the entrepreneurs come along younger and younger, I would make a section directed specifically to the younger generation. For parents and those in the older generation, the step-by-step directions are helpful, but in a more fast-paced younger society, a branch off to the younger generations would make this company/site even stronger.
3) This site specifically targets small business owners, which is a plus because with the experience the founders have, as well as the marketing techniques they are providing, these business are sure to get their names out to the public. However, restaurant businesses are the only market they specifically target and there are going to be other steps when in other industries. They emphasize that not enough businesses are putting videos on facebook, and I believe by marketing not only to restaurants, but a broader category of industries, this company/site would be even more successful!

Italy Goes Pop-Punk

Written on October 6, 2010 – 5:11 pm | by katierobertson

An Italian band called NOTIMEFOR has been making a name for themselves in their home country for a while now, and with their catchy songs and popular music videos it’s only a matter of time before they reach the pop-punk scene here in the USA.  But do they have the talent to do what few European bands in the pop-punk genre have done and make a lasting impact on America?

Check out their Myspace to hear a couple of their songs and decide for yourself!
