Criticism From Your Couch

Written on October 27, 2010 – 4:47 pm | by msathmar

Despite the connotations of laziness that the name of the website provides, TheFutonCritic.com is actually one of the most in-depth and comprehensive criticism websites for television. Not only does it have basic reviews and blogs, there are also breaking television news stories, and A to Z guide of shows on  television.

Likewise, the “My Futon” section is quite intruiging. Once the user has signed into the website and created a username and password, they can select their favorite shows and put it into their personal folder. Anytime there are reviews, breaking news, or changes regarding one of the shows on “your futon”, you will get an email and a link to said piece of media. Talk about not having to leave your couch!

Reality Shows Website Review

Written on October 27, 2010 – 3:43 pm | by storres7

Looking for reality TV show websites wasn’t easy. It is mostly fan blogs that have the high content of reality shows. So I came across of one website that was pretty obvious: A website called the “Reality TV Website.” This website, even though the design is everything BUT appealing to the eye, does have a lot of potential. It has many articles of reality shows, news of reality show stars and the latest trends in reality shows. It is also very informative for reality TV show fans that want to be in a reality show- it has plenty of information on casting calls, the time and the place and the new shows that are searching for new talent!

In the bottom of the website you will find a list of networks that air reality shows. Under each network you will find a list of their reality shows and their latest headlines! You won’t only find headlines about the reality show itself but of the reality show stars and their personal lives.

Reality TV Website also makes sure to give you the times of every show and what you should keep a look out for in the reality show world.

The Poetry Foundation: Poetry at your Fingertips

Written on October 27, 2010 – 3:40 pm | by mwhitfie

The Poetry Foundation’s website seemingly has it all:  They broadcast poetry, they broadcast critiques of poetry, they run a poetry magazine, they feature video and audio of poets and artists, and they have interactive tools to allow for more convenient and user friendly access to poetry.  The Poetry Foundation lives, breathes and yes, eats poetry!

One of the leading literary foundations in the world, the Poetry Foundation was established in 2003, developing out of the Modern Poetry Association, which was founded in 1941.  The non-profit organization is working to raise poetry awareness, so to speak.  Poetry POWER!  They aim to make the art form a more influential in American culture. The Poetry Foundation is leading the way in helping to re-frame the receptivity of poetry by creating new methods for availability and encouraging new kinds of poetry, poets, and readers.

The website generates news about poetry per day for dedicated readers.  It also has more simple tools, such as the “find a poem,” where viewers can navigate their way to poems by searching by category.  They also have a “poetry tool,” where viewers can limit their experience by occasion, poet, keywords, or titles.  These features are perfect for students in school who are assigned a project on poetry or a specific poet.

Also online is Poetry Magazine, which was founded in Chicago by Harriet Monroe in 1912, and is published by the foundation.  Online viewers can access limited content of current and past issues before deciding to subscribe.  There is also an opportunity for poets/writers to submit their work for possible publication.  Another piece to the website is “Harriet: The Blog.”  Harriet is a news blog on the website and provides online discussion about poetry.

If I could contribute to the Poetry Foundation’s website, I would pitch the following three concepts:

One: Implement an online video forum for poets and fans to connect.  Perhaps, run a week out of the month where poets with new material come to talk about poetry and answer questions about their work via live chat.  I think the poetry world is not only niche enough to have people be interested in something like this, but specific enough to foster a friendly and mature atmosphere for discussion.

Two: I have this idea of a piece on the Marilyn Monroe book, “Fragments,” that was released this month.  (onMason interstitial here) Though I am not completely sure how it would work, I want to do a slideshow of her most iconic pictures, and pair them with an excerpt from the book that corresponds chronologically to when each picture was taken.  This would aim to demonstrate the contrast between her public image and her private-self.

Three: I would like to see something on the website that dives into “How-to’s.”  For example, how to critique a poem could possibly be featured in a section of the website.   Or perhaps, how to write certain type of poem would be useful.  I see this bringing traffic to the website and consequently, increasing the reputable image that it already has.

Cameron commits to Avatar Sequels over Battle Angel

Written on October 27, 2010 – 3:04 pm | by ohstalon06

This was reported in Variety but I located this on Anime News Network. Director James Cameron has officially said that his next films are going to be sequels to the Oscar-nominated ‘Avatar’. This is a pretty disappointing announcement to anime fans, because it had been thought that Cameron would be doing a live-action version of the early 1990’s manga and OVA series ‘Battle Angel Alita’ which he has been working on since about 2003. This is very disappointing, chiefly because the number of live-action anime adaptations in theaters have been both critical and financial flops including ‘Speed Racer’ which was done by the Wachowski’s of ‘The Matrix’ fame. A film like ‘Battle Angel’ with a director like Cameron who is well known for making successful films could have helped increase the credibility of live-action adaptations of anime. But with this news, we’re left waiting to see if the film will EVER get made.

Cat eye inspired sunglasses are gracing the fashion world. These exaggerated sunglasses are popular in leopard print this fall. You can splurge on a pair like these, or spend a little over 5 bucks on these. Which ever you choose, you’ll be on your shades game!

Cruising on Shelfari

Written on October 27, 2010 – 2:31 pm | by Aisha Jamil

In a world of social networking, the time for five-page book reviews is over. For many, their attention span is 140 characters long or less.

As an avid book reader, I want to know what others are reading nowadays. I pay more attention to what my family and friends think rather than what a specific book reviewer might think. I don’t want a long analysis on what the plot or setting symbolizes, rather I just want to know if the book is good or not. For those who agree with this notion, I recommend Shelfari.com.

Shelfari lets users display books that they have read, want to read or are reading now. Users can also be their own critic and provide their feedback on books by reviewing and rating them on a five-star scale.

They can connect their shelf with friends and see what they have in common, what they are reading and what they think of the books they’ve just read. Users can request friends to provide recommendations as well as create groups to talk about certain books.

Shelfari provides a list of most popular books being read by its user. The site is gaining popularity because of Facebook. This application is called Virtual Bookshelf and can be used via Facebook.

The web site is a good source for those who want:

–      Quick easy-to-read fun reviews

–      To connect with their friends and see what books they recommend

–      To easily access their shelf via Facebook

–      Personalized recommendations

The web site is not recommended for those who:

–      Want scholarly reviews

–      Lengthy analysis

Here is a sample of what Shelfari provides:

–      List of Most Popular Books

–      A Chance to Connect with its Community

–      Blog on Books

Although Shelfari is one of my favorite applications/web sites to use for books, there are certain things I would hope to better such as:

–      An interactive live feed scheduled once a  week on certain new controversial books

–      A discussion panel for what readers want future books to address

–      Monthly magazine that highlights upcoming books for the month

Written on October 27, 2010 – 1:06 pm | by schrist8

Nike SB is about to release the second video from their skate team’s “The Bird is the World” European tour. If this is anything like the last one, the filmmaking will be on point, and it will feature some of today’s most relevant skaters such as P-Rod, Eric Koston, Lance Mountain and more…
