In a Houston Chronicle interview, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan discusses why he hates the album format, why he hates nostalgia tours and why he hates negative reaction to his new work.

    Even though this song was a hit on modern rock radio and the album really was a huge breakthrough for the band, I could understand Corgan not liking it because of the dark messages it contains. Corgan wrote the song about a day in which he was having suicidal thoughts, exemplified by the reference to self-mutilation in the chorus. The song has an upbeat sound, which is quite ironic here.

    Wow, I had no idea Billy Corgan felt that way. Why would he make albums if he hates them so much? I guess it’s all about the money.

    Billy Corgan can go to hell. I went to a “Smashing Pumpkins” (if you can call it that at this point) show a couple years ago and it’s very evident Corgan isn’t a fan of nostalgia. He definitely doesn’t play all the hits and he ended his performance by yelling at a fan who echoed the sentiment of the entire audience: “You guys used to rock!”
