Feature Post: Is Google Polluting the Internet

Written on November 10, 2010 – 6:46 pm | by capriciaalston

Google “search engine is no longer a search engine but the most powerful commercializing force on the Internet and degrades knowledge while celebrating consumerism.” This was found in Washington Post’s blog post from last week. Melissa Bell reported on Micah White, from Guardian, and his opinion on Google and what it is doing to the Internet as well as society. His opinion was far from positive, being that he believes that Google is fully responsible for our knowledge downfall. “Google is battling to become the dominant TV provider. Its phone platform just surpassed the iPhone. It markets YouTube, Web browsers, e-mail services.”

In this post, Bell did not interview anybody. Instead, she read an argument that White had previously stated about Google, and provided that in the article. Since it was provided, she critiqued/analyzed what he said found where she agreed, didn’t agree, or what was questionable. I think it would have been a better interview if she had actually interviewed White because the article she wrote appears to just be molded around statements and opinions that White previously had, rather than specific question she may have wanted answered.

There is no evidence that she did any outside research besides what White argued, so honestly the feature doesn’t even seem that credible. Knowing absolutely nothing about Bell besides being a reporter, there is no extrinsic evidence as to why she would even be credible for writing this story. Also, what I found annoying is that White’s opinion/argument was only provided in a link, so I had to read his part before I could even form an opinion on this article. I don’t have any questions I want answered, but rather more visuals whether it was through pictures or just words, how Google is basically monopolizing the entertainment/technology industry. Everything she wrote was more White said, rather than studies, facts, etc. say.

In the first three paragraphs we are just introduced to Google and touch on White. Bell tells us that Google has dumbed us basically by making researching so much easier and therefore causing us to be lazy.

The middle paragraphs go deeper into White’s opinion and how Google dominates without putting her opinion on whether she agrees or if she thinks it is negative on society or not.

The concluding paragraphs questions White’s opinions as well as if Google is really the base of the cause for us becoming dumber. She leaves it with a question at the end. This is my favorite part of the entire post because although I agree, it does make you question and just think back to how different everything used to be without google.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Feature

Written on November 10, 2010 – 5:10 pm | by schrist8

Odd Future Wolf Gang is a collective of rappers, producers, skaters, homies, and artists from the LA area. To put it simply, they have developed a cult following over the past few years through self-released, self-designed, self-produced mixtapes; and a rack of youtube videos that are sometimes hilarious, usually ridiculous, and always shocking. What they do is like a culmination of Jackass, Wu-Tang Clan, The Neptunes, and Slipknot that results in an unusual brand of gory-rap by teenage kids in Supreme hats and skinny jeans.

Odd Future releases the grimiest rap music I’ve heard since Wu-Tang Clan, without making it sound forced. They also release videos on their youtube channel that span everywhere from them skating, to them smoking weed and tagging, to them slapping each other. Their self-produced videos are ridiculous: the video for “VCR” is a lovesong where the main dude is making love to a doll. Their movement has won over countless fans and earned them a cult following, they also recently caught the attention of such publications as Pitchfork, Fader, and Rolling Stone. Whether intentionally or not, their sound is somewhat of a postmodern response to the current state of rap. In an interview, the undisputed brains behind the operation, Tyler the Creator, claims “what do these f***ing kids have? They have f***ing Drake. Let’s be honest, we’re not all sitting at the club with 40 f***ing b***hes around us every night.” That is very true, Tyler… let’s hope this might be a trend of new artists talking about what things are really like in America right now. Especially in hip-hop, we could use this kind of revival.

A Tribute by a Fan to Satoshi Kon

Written on November 10, 2010 – 4:18 pm | by ohstalon06

Adding to the numerous fan tributes to the passing of Satoshi Kon, Otaku USA Magazine editor-in-chief Patrick Macias gives his thoughts on the man’s body of work in a feature that he penned mere hours after the news of his death. This article, I think really shows just how raw any anime fan was when the news of Kon’s death. It had felt like that we had been hit upside the head with something hard and Macias’ article really shows that very very well. All I can say with this is that this is an article from someone who has seen his movies and had incredible respect for the man. He starts his feature out like a regular news article which just states the obvious of what exactly happened, right after the news was breaking out on Twitter.

The second paragraph mentions other days like that one by mentioning when industry stalwarts Osamu Tezuka and Shotaro Ishinmori passed away. He also mentions that the fan reaction of when he passed away has been near universally united in sadness and sorrow which is something that doesn’t happen too much at all because of the diversity of anime. Next he goes into his own experiences watching the film and talks about how he felt when he saw the films on screen for the first time he had seen the movies, then he goes into what he thinks made Kon such a fantastic director and melds that with more personal experiences before concluding his piece.

Overall I have really no issues about this feature, yes it may read more as a personal eulogy for Kon’s life, but it is wholly appropriate for the suddenness and tragic nature of how he passed away. It is unfortunate that Macias never got to meet the man before his passing, if he had that would have been a fantastic extra piece of information that would have been great to add to this article. Even without it, its a touching piece about how Satoshi Kon was someone that did so much for a medium in such a short amount of time.

Boondock Saints…The Comic?

Written on November 10, 2010 – 7:22 am | by gpelkofski

Apparently there is a comic book based on the cult movie “The Boondock Saints.” Actually not just one, but two. “Boondock Saints: The Head of the Snake,” released today by 12 Gauge Comics, is a sequel to another Saints’ comic series “Boondock Saints: In Nomine Partis.”

The story details what the vigilantes were doing between the first and second film. Here’s a preview of the comic.

I’m a fan of the first movie, but after hearing how terrible the sequel was, I’m wondering if this adaptation is necessary.
